Recognising and Responding to Abuse

March 20, 2018 |

Altura Learning (Formerly Aged Care Channel) is proud to present their new course Recognising and Responding to Abuse which develops greater awareness of common types of abuse, whilst examining the carer’s role in recognising and reporting signs of possible abuse.

It is estimated that 1 in 6 older people will be the victim of elder abuse and this figure is only expected to rise as the proportion of older people in our population increases. Elder abuse may be perpetrated by family, friends or carers and can cause substantial physical and psychological harm to the older person.

Altura Learning have produced this new course, available from April 27, 2018, to empower people working in a home care setting to recognise different types of abuse and to understand how they should respond if they feel a person is being abused.

During this course Health Law and Elder Abuse specialist, Linda Starr, presents for us the most common types of abuse suffered by older persons. Linda Starr engages staff using varied scenarios of elder abuse that carers may encounter whilst on the job. A suite of learning resources supports the ACC Recognising and Responding to Abuse course, including our Essential Assessment that enables staff to demonstrate they understand the information presented. Our more advanced assessments indicate whether staff can extrapolate the knowledge gained from the course and are able to apply this knowledge to real work situations.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify the different types of elder abuse
  • Recognise the signs of elder abuse
  • Understand staff roles and responsibilities if abuse is suspected
